Forever Dumb

These Tea Party people, whichever Tea Party they’re in, worry me. As I believe the medical community might put it, I don’t think they’re playing with a full deck. I understand that, at its core, the movement is supposed to be about how we’re taxed too much as it is. The funny thing is, they weren’t being taxed too much when these rallies started. Bush never raised taxes on these people, and he even lowered them for the fortunate few making way more than any ten of these people put together. But it seems like they put out an invitation to everyone who hates anything about the government, for whatever reason. And, as a result, they’ve managed to attract: people who are pissed off because former Bush Treasury Secretary Hank Paulson managed to save his friends at Goldman Sachs (while letting one of their chief rivals go under), the Birthers who think President Obama is constitutionally ineligible (FTR, he was born in Hawaii in 1961, not Kenya, no matter what anybody tells you), people who think this is all a plot to take away our guns (which really isn’t an issue), people who rant that abortion is murder (again, an issue that has nothing to do with taxes or government accountability), people who think this means the United States is a Socialist Nation (News Flash: In part, we have been for a long time, racists, bigots, xenophobes, and Glenn Beck.)

Glenn Beck is their hero, their Guiding Light. He supports their rallies and promotes them on his radio and TV shows (which may be in violation of his employers’ rules). And he convinces them, in that earnest-sounding way he has, that not only is this country going straight down the toilet, but that it is entirely Obama’s fault. If the Tea Party people aren’t playing with a full deck, Glenn Beck is playing Seven Card Stud with a deck of six cards. And as long as these people listen to him and his ilk, they will remain forever dumb.

“Forever Dumb”
inal Words and Music, “Forever Young”, by Jim Cregan, Rod Stewart, Kevin Savigar, Bob Dylan
Additional Lyrics by Wayne A. Schneider

Why’s the True word not with you
Down every road you roam?
Why do sunlight and truthfulness
Confound you when you’re far from home?
And what you know to be loud,
“Verified and true”
Was spun unto others
As you had spun to you
Be pugnacious and a knave,
And in my heart you’ll always stay
Forever dumb, forever dumb
Forever dumb, forever dumb

May good fortune be with you
For your Guiding Light’s been wrong
Built a straw man to heaven and
Convinced you to tag along
And if you never use your brain
Then in my heart you will remain

Forever dumb, forever dumb
Forever dumb, forever dumb
For…ever dumb
For…ever dumb

And when you finally find your way,
I’ll be hoping that Truth served you well
For all your dimness through your lifetime,
No one can ever tell
But whatever side you choose
They’ll still decide you’re fit for use

Forever dumb, forever dumb
Forever dumb, forever dumb
For…ever dumb
For…ever dumb
For, forever dumb
For…ever dumb
